Citation Rate

A dark field with small dim particles; some adhere to fixed lattice nodes, forming a dense luminous cluster, representing mention rate (dim particles) and citation rate (luminous cluster from lattice adherence)
Citation rate is the proportion of answers with a link, differing from mention rate; mentions precede citations as citations require specific retrievable content

IN ONE SENTENCE

Citation rate is the share of answers that carry a link to you. It is not mention rate: being named is not the same as being cited.

Citation rate is the share of answers that carry a link to you. It is not mention rate: being named is not the same as being cited.

OUR POSITION

Mention rate rising before citation rate is the normal order. A citation requires a specific retrievable, checkable page — a higher bar than the model merely knowing your name.

01

Calculation and collection

Citation rate = answers carrying a citation to the domain ÷ total answers. It differs from share of answer, whose denominator is all citations rather than all answers.

Only platforms that list sources per answer allow direct counting. Elsewhere it can only be estimated, and the estimate must be labelled.

02

What gets cited

The Princeton paper (KDD 2024) tested this across 10,000 queries: adding statistics, adding cited sources, and adding quotations produced a 30–40% relative lift on visibility metrics.

The same paper found an 'equaliser effect': pages ranked around fifth gained most (+115.1%) while first-ranked pages lost roughly 30.3% on average. The method pays off more for brands outside the top tier.

03

Do not chase dominance

Even the most-cited domains rarely exceed 5% share on a single platform. The goal is reliable presence in the source list, not filling it.
