What GEO Is

IN ONE SENTENCE

GEO is the practice of organising content and evidence around real decision questions so a brand is easier to include and recommend inside a generative engine's answer.

GEO — generative engine optimization — organises content and evidence around the questions buyers actually ask, so a brand is easier to include and recommend inside an AI answer. Its object is the answer, not the link list, and that single difference changes the goal, the measurement and the deliverables versus SEO.

OUR POSITION

GEO is not a new technology sitting outside search. It optimises one chain — being retrieved, being believed, being written into the answer. Any claim of a proprietary AI algorithm or a private indexing channel can be dismissed on sight.

01

What is actually being optimised

Conventional search returns links and leaves the choice to the user; a generative engine finishes the filtering before anything appears. Competition therefore moves upstream, from winning a click to entering the candidate set and making it into the answer.

The chain has four segments: can it be crawled, is it retrieved, is it mentioned and cited, and does visibility convert. Break any segment and everything downstream is wasted — which is why GEO diagnosis has to run in order.

The actionable part is content and evidence, not the algorithm. The Princeton GEO paper (KDD 2024, 10,000 queries) measured a 30–40% relative visibility lift from adding statistics, cited sources and quotations — the three best-evidenced actions available.

02

What it explicitly excludes

Manipulation: fabricated reviews, keyword stuffing, bought links and inflated comment activity. These may work briefly, become a liability, and directly contradict the goal of being treated as a credible source.

Reputation monitoring. GEO's boundary is content assets and the evidence chain — what you publish and whether it checks out. Surveillance of everything said everywhere is a different service with different tooling.

Commitments to a specific rank. AI answers have no stable position structure, so promising one promises something uncontrollable.

03

Why now

The landscape is still moving: on Similarweb's measure ChatGPT's share of generative-AI web traffic fell from roughly 76% to about 53% while its own volume held flat — the category grew around it. No single platform's playbook transfers to all of them.

The other half of the picture is platform silence: outside Google's May 2026 guidance, none of them has published anything about how content gets cited. Every playbook is reverse-engineered, so check the source behind any claim that a platform 'confirmed' something.
